As a result of the meetings held recently in Dublin, Ireland, contracting parties of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) agreed to forbid the use of driftnets in the Mediterranean Sea.
The 38 Member States also approved the recommendation of prohibiting the unloading of fish –at their harbors- caught by vessels that do not have a quota within the regional fishery organization, such as the ICCAT.
EU ministers met in Venice, Italy, to analyze the fishing activities in the Mediterranean. One of the main conclusions drawn from the meetings is the agreement to develop control and stock conservation systems to ensure better fishing, and also to contribute to the battle against illegal fishingâ€.
