Spoiled Tuna Too Much For Replica Crew ff

19 May 2005 Spain

During the long voyage from the Panama Canal to Hawaii, all the crewmembers on board the Nao Victoria replica vessel endured food poisoning after eating fresh caught tuna fish in bad conditions, reported Dr. Andres Romero, medical doctor on board the vessel. The Noa Victoria is a full-scale replica of one of Ferdinand Magellan’s ships, and the only one of five of the squadron to complete the first circumnavigation of the globe.

The "Nao Victoria" replica vessel, is not equipped with cool storage facilities and therefore the tuna was not preserved appropriately, and not consumed shortly after being caught by the crew. The doctor also explained that the crew needed several corticoid injections to improve their medical condition.

Precisely, the food issue is one of the most remarkable differences between the voyages of the original vessel and its replica. The current and adventurous crew travel under different and much better conditions then their colleagues in the past. They try to imitate real conditions on the ship by eating fresh caught fish, such as tuna. But the event of spoiled tuna shows the hazards fishermen faced in the old days. Luckily the current crew has access to abundant canned food as well as bottled water.

The “Nao Victoria” vessel took a different route avoiding the Magellan’s Strait and chose to cross the Panama Canal because of the bad weather conditions; otherwise it would not make it on time to the Expo Exhibition at Aichi, Japan.

The floating Spanish Pavilion will moor at the port of Tokyo on May 26th to continue route towards Nagoya, Aichi capital.
