The Spanish Fisheries Confederation (CEPESCA) wanted to send a message of reassurance to fish consumers and has ensured that the area where Japanese nuclear “disaster†occurred is very away from areas where the Spanish fleet are fishing.
Speaking to EFE-Agro, CEPESCA secretary general, Javier Garat, has stated that although the Spanish vessels fishing all around the world, “they are not fishing in that precise zone,†which “is far away from our fishing activity.â€
He also mentioned that in Spain and in the European Union there are daily inspections on the products crossing these borders to ensure that they are fit for consumption.
In his opinion, if there should be any warning, all procedures that have been established both the EU and the Spanish Government to protect consumers would be launched.
He explained that usually 4 purse seiners and 15 longliners are operating in Pacific waters, however “not around Japan, but in a very different and, of course, outside the exclusive economic zone of this country.â€
