A double Spanish victory marked this year’s European Tuna Awards in Brussels. The television commercial for Atun Claro of the Spanish cannery Calvo is the winner of the 2011 award  for the best tuna TV commercial. In the category best tuna products, Tuna balls in Tomato Sauce of Isabel could take the 2011 trophy home.

The audience of the European Tuna Conference choose the Calvo ‘underwater orchestra’ TV commercial, a sequel of its much honored ‘Sacatunn’ clip, as the best of total five competing European tuna ads. Among them were the Bom Petisco commercial of the Portuguese Cofaco Azores. Conservas Isabel Spain with a clip for their kids’ tuna sausages and tuna balls, the Italian Nostromo Neptune commercial and the Mareblu clip from the Italian Generale Conserve.

Calvo, also winner of the 2009 television commercial award, again convinced the voters with its powerful, rhythmic commercial clip of the underwater orchestra that make the best tuna jump out of the sea. Calvo Group’s board director, Marta Calvo, received the 2011 trophy from the hands of Mr. Henk Brus, CEO of the conference and award organizing Atuna.

An independent panel of cross section of tuna consumers and tuna professionals made a choice out of seven different tuna products available in the European market, testing it on several criteria like taste, bite and presentation.

The Italian Nostromo competed with two Sughi Freschi  products (tuna with tomatoes, capers and anchovies and tuna with artichokes and tomatoes). French MW Brand contributed its Petite Navire smoked canned tuna.

From Sri Lanka Tropic Frozen Foods had presented their ultra frozen yellowfin tuna loins for the award, while Spanish Salica, competed with Campos preserved albacore tuna in olive oil.

Spanish Conservas Isabel was represented by two products: its tuna sausages and tuna balls in tomato sauce.  The American Norpac tried to compete with its bigeye tuna loins, but due to the fact that the Belgian border burocracy obstructed the import of their fresh tuna loins, the jury was unable to test the product.

The panel choose Isabel’s tuna balls in tomato sauce as best product because of its real tuna taste, good structure and pleasant bite, which combined excellently with the tasty tomato sauce. It was considered a convenient – easy to prepare dressing for pasta or rice meals, very accessible for children,  but also as a quick and easy prepared family meal. Isabel’s Supply Chain Manager, Iker Galindez, took the 2011 Award home to Spain.
