Anfaco Meets New Spanish Lawmaker For Stricter Regulations On Vegan Tuna
Executives from Spanish canning association Anfaco met the newly elected Secretary General for Consumption and Gaming Andrés Barragán this week to reiterate their demand to ban the use of tuna and other seafood names on the labels of vegan food items.
Anfaco, along with ANICE (National Association of Meat Industries of Spain) and AVIANZA (Spanish Interprofessional Association of Poultry Meat) kick-started a joint initiative #CadaCosaPorSuNombre, which translates to #EveryThingByItsName in February. Its prime aim was to ensure that all products available in the market are accurately labeled and do not confuse consumers by using names such as vegan tuna. Furthermore, the progress made on the campaign was discussed with Barragán. The associations also put forward some requests including prohibiting the use of the currently used strategies of plant-based companies to promote their items which misinforms buyers. They pushed for the strengthening of surveillance on the labels of vegan items and urged the Secretary General to begin educational campaigns to raise awareness of the nutritional difference between animal and plant-based products.
