Spanish Longliner Crew Makes Narrow Escape After Fire Breaks Out
The Spanish-flagged longliner ‘Pico Tresmares’ sank 1,000 miles off Chile’s coast, in the Pacific Ocean, after its engine caught fire. All 19 crew members escaped in lifeboats. The incident happened in the wee hours of Monday. The crew alerted officials of the “uncontrollable” fire and nearby boats were contacted for help. Portuguese-flagged boat ‘Avo Músico’ was the closest. It immediately arrived at the spot and rescued the crew members amid heavy rain and harsh weather conditions, reported Spanish news sites.
The 44-meter-long ‘Pico Tresmares’ is homeported in Cillero, a Galician province. It has a 644 G/T and 490 cubic meters fish hold capacity. The longliner is owned by Pesquera Guadalquivir, S.L.
