Shaken Up Tuna Trade – How To Secure Private Label Sourcing?

15 April 2025

Agathe Grossmith

US buyers recently started contacting South American tuna processors to explore possibilities of a competitive alternative supply of canned tuna when imports from their major suppliers Thailand and Vietnam became ridiculously expensive due to the extraordinarily additional tariff. Americans demanding more origin rule tuna from Ecuador and Colombia could pose a threat for European traders and retailers that are often heavily relying on Ecuadorian processors for their private-label supply.

Now that the new Trump duties are paused for 90 days to give room to negotiations, the threat is not over for EU buyers. It is still uncertain what the future will bring and the Americans will possibly search for more alternative supply chains to secure their demand at the lowest costs and risks.

What will be the impact on private-label canned tuna sourcing by retailers in Europe? The changes are almost impossible for retailers to keep up with. What is the right move for them in light of the growing consumer demand for sustainability?

Agathe Grossmith, Director CRSD at Carrefour, will highlight the sustainability policy of the European retail chain at the European Tuna Conference on May 5 in Barcelona, and what needs to be done to stay ahead and secure the supply. The shifting market expectations and the growing consumer demand for sustainability will be topic.

Grossmith oversees the sustainability performance of the retail group. To define and implement the right actions for transformation in stores and supply chain, she establishes partnerships with different actors among stakeholders and suppliers.
