Do Social Networks Mirror Our Business Reality?
It might come as a surprise to some, but the presence of tuna professionals as well as tuna fanatics has been noticeable all over the internet for some time now. And it’s not only big tuna companies witnessing a high volume of online traffic, with small, local canneries and tuna firms also having their say. Social media is now becoming a mirror of reality; a virtual space where companies are also starting to reflect the current state and innovations of their businesses, with the ultimate intention to reach the final consumer.
You can find proof of this on Twitter; which together with LinkedIn are now considered by many as the main professional social networks. Do a quick search for the hashtag #tuna and take a look at the huge amount of results: news, pictures, recipes, new products, brands, agreements, and more. It’s always being updated; the most recent one was probably only published a few minutes ago. Thanks to their Community Management strategies, some tuna companies even manage to have as much as 10,000 followers.
When it comes to brands’ online presence, this is not so easy to track, especially bearing in mind the uncountable number of tuna brands that exist nowadays. That’s why in this Social Media-Spotlight section we’ll try to show you what we consider the top brands and topics of the moment.
ATUNA’s Top Twitter Tuna Brand
Having taken over the words ‘Sorry Charlie!’ and given them a whole new meaning with a really smart advertising strategy, the clear winner of our first edition is @StarKistCharlie. StarKist’s Community Manager tweets in first person as if it was the firm’s cartoon mascot himself speaking to his followers.
The account is mainly focused on promoting the firm’s wide variety of ‘creations’ products, making use of striking videos and moving images, while at the same time continuously encouraging users to consume tuna. With tweets such as the ones below, this has managed to turn Charlie the Tuna’s profile into one of our favorites on Twitter; it surely is a consumers’ favorite too!
Top Twitter Tuna Trend
Twitter can also be a really useful tool when it comes to news and trend analysis about the tuna industry and market. The first quarter of the year has closed with a clear ‘top’ topic from Atuna’s tweets, which has unfortunately been going on for far longer than industry stakeholders would like. Even though the tuna related feed on Twitter is usually linked to tuna products or inventions, this semester’s top trending subject has been related to none other than Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU).
Will this trend be as never-ending in the industry as it seems to be on social media? Let’s hope not!
