American Samoa Gets FFA Observer Status
American Samoa was recently granted observer status in the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency(FFA). Taotasi Archie Solilai, Director of the American Samoa Department of Marine Wildlife and Resources, said that this new status brings the island “closer to the discussion table that pertains to the fisheries in the Pacific,” reported Talanei. He explained: “The tuna stocks are a regional stock since they are migratory, and being in the room with our Pacific colleagues to discuss and manage these resources is a milestone achievement.”
Solilai also stated that American Samoa is “proud of the inclusivity and approval and are eager to contribute to the discussions.” The territory's observer status will allow it to attend FFA Committee meetings. The FFA is an advisory body that provides technical assistance and expertise to its 17 members which are islands in the Pacific region. American Samoa is not an FFA member.
