EU Soon To Begin Evaluation Of Common Fisheries Policy
The European Commission has begun a consultation to assess the effectiveness of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). It will examine in depth how the CFP has achieved its objectives since 2013. This will be done in four main areas: long-term sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture, contribution to the protection of the marine environment, availability of food supplies, and a fair standard of living for tuna and other seafood fisheries and aquaculture communities. CFP, the fisheries policy of the EU, sets quotas for which member states are allowed to catch each type of fish and encourages the fishing industry through various market interventions.
The commission will gather information from stakeholders in the fisheries and maritime sectors, NGOs, and national administrations of member states. A second consultation, which will include a questionnaire focusing on specific aspects of the evaluation, will be launched in the coming months. The results will be published at the beginning of 2025.
