Longliner To Be Converted Into Floating Museum
The regional government of the Spanish island Lanzarote announced that the tuna longliner ‘Nuevo Santa Teresa', will be converted into a floating museum that tell the island's maritime heritage. The vessel was an integral part of the local fishing fleet and was donated to the government two decades back, but is now moored at a harbor. The museum intends to protect the history of the Lanzarote and nearby La Graciosa islands tuna fisheries and serve as an educational tool for new generations.
A government spokesperson said that some modifications will be made to the structure of the vessel to maintain the essence of what it was during the fishing days. ‘Nuevo Santa Teresa’ will be anchored in the Marina of Arrecife, a harbor in Lanzarote, where it will be open to the public very soon. “The idea is that the children of Lanzarote and La Graciosa tour the interior of the boat, from bow to stern, and discover how important fishing was to our culture,” he said to several Spanish newspapers.
