The two-day event started last Saturday with a non-competitive 2 km swimming event. The main competition was held on Sunday, in two separate 2.5 km and 5 km rounds. Over 350 swimmers dived into the water for the 13th edition of ‘TunaRaceBalfegó’, organized by bluefin farming company Balfegó. The winners of the competition are yet to be announced on the company’s website. This year also featured a kids’ cruise for little ones. One of the members of the ‘TunaRaceBalfegó’ organizing team said the goal of the event is for families to spend a weekend in L’Ametlla de Mar, where it happens every year, to enjoy the sea and the other attractions in the town.
The race is part of the ‘Balfegó Experience’, a series of tourism, educational, and culinary initiatives, organized by the company to bring the public closer to its activities and the bluefin. The ‘Tuna Race’ was introduced in 2013 in the Mediterranean to celebrate the sport “inspired by the resilience and strength of the bluefin as a symbol of achievement,” read a statement from Balfegó. Another event, ‘Chef Balfegó 2025,’ was organized last week, where culinary experts competed to present innovative creations with Balfegó tuna as the star ingredient.
