The Taiwan Fisheries Agency announced that the country’s 2025 bluefin fishing season ended on Sunday. Local vessels captured 11,500 Pacific bluefin, weighing a combined 2,300 tons, slightly exceeding the officially announced quota of 2,200 tons. However, errors in reporting often occur at sea, and the removal of gills could allow Taiwan to still be under the announced quota, reported Taiwan News.

The country’s bluefin fishing period typically runs from April to June because of the seasonal migratory patterns of the fish and favorable oceanographic conditions in the region. The celebrated Pingtung Bleufin Tuna Cultural Festival is also held during this time. The Fisheries Agency implement strict quota controls during this season, leading to market prices remaining steady throughout the season. The Donggang District Fishermen’s Association, which operates in a Taiwanese fishing town renowned for its significant bluefin catch, said this year’s largest bluefin weighed 375 kg. The association expects 500 bluefin to arrive at the harbor in the next few days.
