The Pingtung Bluefin Tuna Cultural Festival began last Saturday in Donggang Township in Taiwan. It was inaugurated by officials in Pingtung County. One of them said that bluefin is an internationally regulated species, and Taiwan complies with global conservation rules. The government has introduced multiple policies to support the sustainability of the stock, reported Taiwanese news sites. Over the next few days, the festival will host cultural events, food fests, and shops to promote Pingtung as a tourism hub.

It is held every year after the first bluefin arrives at the port, usually in April or May, and thousands of people gather at the festival. This year’s fish was caught on April 6 in the waters southeast of Taiwan. It weighed 224.6 kg and was sold for TWD 2,307,200 (USD 78,292).
