Will Tuna Fishers Steal The Limelight At Spanish Film Festival?

19 March 2025

OPAGAC-produced Spanish film ‘1.17,’ which shows the challenges faced by fishers, was screened at the ongoing Málaga Festival, an annual film event held in Andalusia, earlier this week. The movie, directed by Spanish filmmaker Javier Linares, premiered last year at the Luchana Theatre in Madrid and received a lot of praise. “The movie brings the viewer closer to the effort, dedication, and commitment that exists behind each can of tuna that reaches our homes, through the portrait of a tide in the Indian Ocean aboard the ‘Itsas Txori’, a Spanish vessel based in Bermeo,” read a statement from OPAGAC. The winning movie will be awarded the ‘Golden Biznaga,’ a recognition for the best Spanish and Ibero-American film. The festival that began last week will conclude on March 23.

Julio Morón, Managing Director of OPAGAC said that the selection of ‘1.17’ to the film festival is a recognition of a fleet that operates with the highest sustainability and social standards. “Our activity not only guarantees the supply of a key food for global food security but also boosts the economy in numerous coastal regions and strengthens cooperation with the countries where we fish,” he explained.
