‘A Bowl Of Tuna’ Is Back In Isla Cristina
The Spanish coastal town of Isla Cristina is hosting the annual open-air exhibition ‘A Bowl of Tuna’ and the 22nd Almadraba Captains Meeting from September 8 to 15. It is organized by the Society of Friends of Thunnus Thynnus Tuna and Wine Lovers, in collaboration with the island council. The week-long event will witness a tuna conference over bluefin fishing, lectures, presentations, and workshops. The organizers said that 12 bluefin artworks, made by artists in Isla Cristina and nearby islands, would be exhibited at ‘A Bowl of Tuna.’ They told Spanish news sites that “each tuna has an essence and a message that gives them different personalities reflecting the watermark of their respective authors.”
The city council stated that it will emphasize the need for opening an Almadraba for the islanders since Isla Cristina is a crucial tuna city with bluefin fishing being one of its fundamental economic pillars. The Port of Isla Cristina is the most important in Andalusia with a large number of tuna and other fishing boats landing their catches daily. There has been a rising demand for the return of an Almadraba in the island over the past few years. This fishing technique was practiced in the region almost a century back. The Almadraba is currently practiced in the other municipalities such as Barbate, Zahara and Conil.
