Atuna Informs Readers On The Importance Of Selenium In Tuna

03 December 2025

The Atuna website now has a dedicated page under the Health section for selenium, the critical mineral that counteracts mercury in tuna and other ocean fish. The page is meant to convey accurate information about the relationship between selenium and mercury, and why tuna is beneficial for health. The tuna industry has once again come under international scrutiny due to misleading information about mercury in tuna.

The page provides information on the Health Benefit Value (HBVs), an accurate seafood safety criterion, and how tuna and other ocean fish contain far more selenium than mercury, which is good for health. Because of the positive HBV levels, foods such as canned tuna are also beneficial for mothers and children.

Readers will also discover why there is so much misunderstanding about mercury toxicity in tuna and other ocean fish, and why there should be more focus on selenium levels in fish.

Atuna recently published articles related to selenium and why the US FDA should update tuna consumption guidelines.

See the Selenium page in our Health Section.

  1. Something for those eight French city councils to rethink their ban on canned tuna in school canteens, following Bloom’s misleading information on mercury. Poor childeren that will now miss essential minerals to develop their brains and a good tuna sandwich.

  2. Thank you atuna. this was much needed considering the hype surrounding mercury and canned tuna. could you share this on social media too so that it reaches more people?
