GLOBEFISH Celebrates 40 Years Of Analytic Contribution To Fishing Sector
GLOBEFISH was founded in 1984 to analyze trade and markets of fisheries and aquaculture products under the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In a two-day event on September 18 and 19, it celebrated its support to the global fishing sector at the FAO headquarters in Rome. Speakers’ presentations and discussions were centered around the theme “40 Years of the FAO GLOBEFISH Project: Key Highlights and Way Forward.”
Over the decades, GLOBEFISH’s work has expanded to promoting and facilitating information exchange among industry, governments, science, and stakeholders in the sector. This is reflected in the establishment of the FISHINFONetwork that links six regional networks: INFOPESCA, INFOFISH, INFOPÊCHE, INFOSAMAK, EUROFISH, and INFOYU. They initially started as FAO projects to provide technical capacity-building services to the member countries and their fishing industry. GLOBEFISH’s statistics are also used for the critical biennial ‘State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture ‘ publication by FAO.
