Small-scale fishing companies catching albacore in the Italian region of Puglia can apply for financial aid due to the regional fishing ban. Puglia is one of three major regions where the albacore fishery is based in the country. The Fisheries, Agriculture and Forestry Ministry published an official public notice last week regarding it.

Puglia has a mandatory period of closure for Thunnus alalunga fishing from October 1 to November 30. The Ministry said in its notice that vessel operators that are authorized to catch albacore can send their documents by the deadline of 12 pm December 4 to apply for economic aid. Albacore is a traditional resource for Italian tuna fishery and the country is one of the major producers of the fish (in cans and jars) in Europe.
